Sunday 21 February - Art and Craft Expo / Salon d'artisanat d'art

Pavillon de Rohan et Galerie Tremel à Gouarec

Amongst the 15 exhibitors demonstrating their skills, were painters – using watercolours and acrylics, on paper, porcelain and even on slate! There was a lithographer, a stained glass maker, a potter with his wheel, a sculptress in clay, a maker of individual teddy bears, an embroiderer of felt decorated ornaments, a soap maker, a jeweller, a handbag and fabric brooch maker and a graphic artist with her posters and greetings cards.  There was a steady stream of visitors throughout the day who really enjoyed seeing these artists at work!

Parmi les 15 exposants qui nous ont démontré leurs métiers, il y avait, des peintres spécialisés en aquarelle et en acrylique, sur papier, sur porcelaine et même sur ardoises ! Il y avait un lithographe, une vitrailliste, un potier, une fabricante de nounours, une brodeuse avec des décorations en feutre, une fabricante de savon, une bijoutière, une fabricante de sacs à main et bijoux en textile, une graphiste avec ses dessins et cartes de vœux.  Il y eut de nombreux visiteurs tout au long de la journée qui ont vraiment apprécié de voir les artistes en action !

Wednesday 10 February - Soirée Crêpes / Soirée Crêpes

Even though there was a blizzard blowing, 3 brave crêpières turned out to make us crêpes for AIKB’s annual celebration of Mardi Gras at the village hall at St Gelven. We all enjoyed their delicious savoury and sweet crêpes which were served with locally made cider.  Thanks to everyone who helped organise this very Breton evening and let’s hope for better weather next year!

Malgré la neige, 3 crêpières courageuses sont venues nous faire des crêpes pour célébrer le mardi gras de l’AIKB . A la salle municipale de St Gelven, nous avons tous apprécié leurs crêpes salées et sucrées qui étaient servies avec du cidre local.  Merci à tous ceux qui ont participé à l’organisation de cette soirée bretonne et en espérant que le temps sera plus favorable l’année prochaine !

Thursday 28 January - Conference "Money Matters" / Conseils juridiques et financiers

Simon and Deborah Verity, both registered financial advisors, gave us a very informative presentation on investments, taxation and transferring money between France and England. They spoke about taking financial advice in France – insuring that a registered company is consulted, defining residency for tax purposes, France as a Tax Haven, Capital Gains Tax, Inheritance Tax, Wealth Tax, Assurance Vie and Currency Exchange.

Simon and Deborah were available at the end of the conference to answer individual questions.

Simon et Deborah Verity, tout deux conseillers financiers, nous ont présenté une conférence sur les investissements, la taxation et le transfert d’argent entre la France et l’Angleterre. Ils ont expliqué l’importance de prendre des conseils financiers  –  choisir une entreprise reconnue par l’Etat, la définition de résidence au regard des impôts, la France comme un paradis fiscal, l’impôt sur les Plus Values, l’impôt sur la Fortune, l’Assurance Vie, et les échanges financiers courants.

Saturday 23 January - Raising Gwenevere / Le Renaissance de Guenièver

Much laughter was to be had as Ian told us why he was mad enough to take on the task of raising a concrete sailing boat from the bottom of the Lac de Guerlédan.  He explained his life long obsession with 'stink-pots', that is boats with engines, how he and his wife met because of a boat and how sails on a boat are all a bit of a mystery to him.

He also told us about the history of concrete boats, the most famous of which are the Mulberry harbours, and showed examples of some beautiful, modern concrete sailing boats.  Before finally showing us video footage of the actual lifting, he explained how to build a boat from concrete.  So, anyone out there who fancies giving it a go, do contact Ian first. 

On a bien rigolé quand Ian nous a raconté les raisons pour lesquelles il a décidé de surélever un bateau avec du béton que se trouvait immergé dans le Lac de Guerlédan. En effet tout découle de sa fascination pour les bateaux à moteurs, de la rencontre avec sa femme au sujet d'un bateau et du fait que pour lui les voiles sur les bateaux sont encore un grand mystère. Il nous a également raconté l'histoire des bateaux de béton, les plus fameux se trouvant sur les quais du port de Mulberry. Il nous a montré également quelques exemples de ce type de bateaux. Avant de montrer un film qu'il a réalisé sur la surélévation qu'il a effectué il nous a expliqué comment construire un bateau de béton. Donc, si vous voulez essayer d'en faire un vous-même prenez contact avec Ian avant de commencer.

Tuesday 19 January – A Moorland Walk Across The Liscuis/Une Promenade Dans Les Landes De Liscuis

Following all the bad weather in early January, the afternoon of the moorland walk across the Liscuis was quite cold but also dry and one could clearly see all the surrounding countryside.  For nearly two hours, Marilyn and Georges le Moign accompanied us on an exploration of their private moorland.

There is a public footpath which crosses this moorland and which gives access to three Neolithic covered burial chambers and also the ruins of the old slate workers houses, but all the rest of this moorland, which is situated between Gouarec and the Abbaye de Bon Repos, is private and we were privileged to be able to explore this local wild area which is not normally open to the public.  The views were marvellous, and the information provided by Marilyn and Georges, on a variety of topics, including the fauna, flora and history of the Liscuis, was very interesting.

After this extremely healthy walk we finished at the shooting lodge of Lan Uvelan where we enjoyed a glass of mulled wine and some cake.

Aprés tout le mauvais temps du début janvier, l’après-midi de la promenade dans les landes de Liscuis était d’un froid assez sec, cependant on pouvait voir clairement toute la campagne environnante.  Pendant presque deux heures, Marilyn et Georges le Moign nous ont accompagnés pour une exploration de leur propriété des landes de Liscuis. 

Un chemin de grande randonnée traverse les landes et permet d’accéder aux trois allées couvertes néolithiques ainsi qu’à des ruines de maisons d’anciennes ardoisières. L’autre partie des landes de Liscuis est située entre Gouarec et l’Abbaye de Bon Repos (cette partie est privée) et nous avons eu le privilège d’explorer une région locale sauvage qui n’est pas normallement ouverte au publique.  Les vues étaient merveilleuses, et les informations que Marilyn et Georges nous ont données, y compris sur la faune, la flore et l’histoire des landes de Liscuis, étaient très intéressante.

Aprés la promenade un peu physique, nous avons terminé celle-ci au relais de chasse de Lan Uvelan où nous avons pris plaisir autour d’un verre de vin chaud et de gâteau.

Sunday 6 December - Christmas Fayre/ Marché de Noël

Despite a night of strong winds and rain, the sun shone on the 2009 Christmas Fair.

The Salle Municipale at St Gelven was full to bursting with stalls offering all kinds of crafts and other goods including stained glass, screen-printed fabrics, quilting, hand-made jewellery, wood-turning and many others. There were also stalls selling chutneys, relishes & dips and a large second-hand bookstall which was constantly busy.

Friends and members of the AIKB had been generous with their donations to the Tombola stall which had numerous prizes. Those selling the draw tickets were so successful that an emergency run had to be made to Gouarec for more tickets.

The Fair was so well attended by both British and French that at times it was difficult to move around as the hall was so packed.

Well done everybody.

Malgré une nuit extrêmement pluvieuse et venteuse, le soleil fit son apparition lors du Marché de Noël. Les exposants sont arrivés à 9h30 pour pouvoir peaufiner leur installation. La salle Municipale de Saint Gelven était pleine à craquer d’exposants offrant toute sorte de produits artisanaux. Dans l’artisanat nous pouvions compter les vitraux, des papiers peints, des bijoux faits main, des objets réalisés sur un tourneur à bois, et bien d’autres choses encore. Il y avait du chutney de différents goûts et origines que l’on pouvait goûter et l’étale des livres d’occasion était constamment assailli.

Les membres, ainsi que leurs amis ont été fort généreux pour la Tombola composée d’un grand nombre de prix. Les vendeurs de tickets ont été si bons qu’il a fallu faire un aller-retour à Gouarec pour trouver des tickets vierges.

Le marché a été très apprécié par les français et les anglais. Par moment il était même difficile de circuler au vu du monde présent.

Thursday 26 November - Charity Talk/ Présentation du fonctionnement des associations

The Salle Polyvalente in Gouarec was full of AIKB members eager to hear about raising money for French charities.  AIKB president, Marilyn Le Moign, compared the differences between French, British and German fund raising methods.  It was interesting to discover that where the French public gave a lot to food aid, the British gave more directly to charity street collections.  Another difference concerned the British high street charity shops supporting individual charities from the sale of donated goods.  In France there are associations which sell donated goods to fund their projects but there is more support for local associations as well as those based in Africa and Cambodia, for example.  We were very lucky to have presentations from five French associations who gave us a real insight into their work. 

We would like to thank the following associations for their participation: Resto du Coeur, La Croix Rouge, Leucémie Espoir, Enfants d'Asie and Association Père Steunou.

La salle polyvalente était remplie de membres d’AIKB qui voulaient connaître le fonctionnement des associations françaises.  La présidente d’AIKB, Marylin Le MOIGN, a présenté les différences entre les associations Françaises, Anglaises et Allemandes.  Ce fut intéressant de voir que les Français donnent plutôt à des associations procurant de la nourriture et que les Anglais donnent plutôt aux associations qui quémandent dans les rues ainsi qu’aux associations qui ont des magasins où la vente de produits est reversée aux associations.  En France, des associations locales font la même chose pour aider des pays tels que l’Afrique et le Cambodge.

Nous tenons à remercier les 5 associations qui sont venues pour nous expliquer leur fonctionnement: Les restaurants du cœur, La croix rouge, Leucémie Espoir, Enfants d’Asie et l’Association du Père Steunou.
