Sunday 6 June: Glorious June Plant Sale/Vent de Plantes Glorieuses de Juin

It couldn't have been a more perfect sunny day to hold a plant sale - there were lots of plants, lot of bargains and lots of people and some great cakes to eat. Upstairs, the Photography Club had an exhibition of photos - the AIKB have some very talented members. This is becoming a really popular annual event.

Cela n'aurait pas pu être une journée aussi parfaite pour ce marché de plantes. Il y avait beaucoup de plantes, de bonnes affaires et de gens ravies des gâteaux qu'ils ont mangé. En haut le club de photographie tenait leur exposition de photo. L'AIKB a vraiment des membres talentueux. Cet événement devient l'un des plus importants du programme annuel.

Tuesday 18 May: Vist to the National Stud Farm, Hennebont/Visite du Haras National d'Hennebont

41 people visited the National Stud Farm at Hennebont. We visited the stables, listened to an explanation of the role of the Stud Farm and watched a demonstration of the stallions being ridden. To see more photos follow this link

Tuesday 9 March  The Conservatoire Botanique National de Brest /Le Conservatoire Botanique National de Brest

Founded in 1975, the Conservatoire Botanique National de Brest was the first establishment worldwide to exclusively dedicate its work to the rescue of endangered plants”

The urban park of Stang-Alar is delightful and is an open space for the people of Brest to enjoy the outdoors.  Our guide Loïc Ruellan, started by discussing the origins and the history of the Conservatoire and the importance of preserving endangered species.  He entertained us with the clever use of giant Lego and a sugar cube as educational aids, to describe how plants develop and grow.

Maggie and Michael - our plant-people members - spotted a small pine tree a Wollemia nobilis. They were overjoyed. Less than one-hundred specimens have been recorded in the wild. This example of an endangered, near extinct species was the first of many others we saw within the four inter-connected greenhouses, which mimicked, humid tropical mountains, subtropical islands, dry tropical areas and rainforests. Within each, M. Ruellan introduced us to an extinct-in-the-wild plant. He explained the reasons for extinction: climate, animals, man, he described the various methods of propagation and how, along with other botanical gardens, including Kew, the sharing of specimens, seeds, experience and knowledge is keeping alive exquisite plants for us to enjoy today and in the future.

Nous étions 27 ,à Brest,  sous un beau soleil  au conservatoire botanique  .Après  un petit rappel de l'importance  vitale des  végétaux pour l'espèce humaine , notre excellent guide bilingue Jean_Yves Lesouef , nous a fait partager  sa passion  des plantes lors de la visite des serres ou sont conservées  des exemplaires   en voie de disparition  provenant de toutes les régions du monde .Je ne saurais que vous  conseillez  cette visite qui nous a ouvert les yeux sur la fragilité de notre planète.

Thursday 25 February - Conference: Crime Prevention and Road Safety / Le Travail des Gendarmes

25 peopleattended a presentation by the Gendarmerie National on Thursday 25th February at the Salle Polyvalente in Gouarec. It was given by Lieutenant Le Fur, Chief Marec and Gendarme Le Bihan.  Chef Marec described the history of the Gendarmerie, its current organisation, responsibilities and its specialist departments.  Whilst the National Police are responsible for the 50% of the population living in the 5% of large towns and cities, the Gendarmerie has jurisdiction for the other 95% of France, its overseas departments and special work in other parts of the world, even to policing of French research stations and expeditions in the Antarctic

Lieutenant Le Fur explained how the Gendarmerie is set-up locally.  The Brigade HQ at Corlay covers the cantons of Corlay, Mur de Bretagne and Gouarec with a staff of 19.  The session was ended with useful crime prevention advice from Gendarme Le Bihan, together with contact information and office opening times.

25 personnes ont assisté à une présentation de la Gendarmerie Nationale par la gendarmerie nationale le jeudi 25 Février à la salle polyvalente à Gouarec. Cette présentation a été réalisée par le Lieutenant Le Fur, le Chef Marec et le Gendarme Le Bihan. Chef Marec a présenté l'histoire de la gendarmerie, et son organisation actuelle, les responsabilités et ses départements spécialisés.

Tandis que la police nationale est responsable de 50% de la population vivant dans les 5% des grandes villes et villes, la gendarmerie a compétence pour les autres soit 95% de la France, et des Département d’Outre Mer à travers le monde, ainsi qu’aux services de la Recherche Française et expéditions dans l'Antarctique

Le Lieutenant Le Fur a expliqué comment la gendarmerie est structurée localement. Sunday 21 February - Art and Craft Expo / Salon d'artisanat d'art

Pavillon de Rohan et Galerie Tremel à Gouarec

Amongst the 15 exhibitors demonstrating their skills, were painters – using watercolours and acrylics, on paper, porcelain and even on slate! There was a lithographer, a stained glass maker, a potter with his wheel, a sculptress in clay, a maker of individual teddy bears, an embroiderer of felt decorated ornaments, a soap maker, a jeweller, a handbag and fabric brooch maker and a graphic artist with her posters and greetings cards.  There was a steady stream of visitors throughout the day who really enjoyed seeing these artists at work!

Parmi les 15 exposants qui nous ont démontré leurs métiers, il y avait, des peintres spécialisés en aquarelle et en acrylique, sur papier, sur porcelaine et même sur ardoises ! Il y avait un lithographe, une vitrailliste, un potier, une fabricante de nounours, une brodeuse avec des décorations en feutre, une fabricante de savon, une bijoutière, une fabricante de sacs à main et bijoux en textile, une graphiste avec ses dessins et cartes de vœux.  Il y eut de nombreux visiteurs tout au long de la journée qui ont vraiment apprécié de voir les artistes en action !

Wednesday 10 February - Soirée Crêpes / Soirée Crêpes

Even though there was a blizzard blowing, 3 brave crêpières turned out to make us crêpes for AIKB’s annual celebration of Mardi Gras at the village hall at St Gelven. We all enjoyed their delicious savoury and sweet crêpes which were served with locally made cider.  Thanks to everyone who helped organise this very Breton evening and let’s hope for better weather next year!

Malgré la neige, 3 crêpières courageuses sont venues nous faire des crêpes pour célébrer le mardi gras de l’AIKB . A la salle municipale de St Gelven, nous avons tous apprécié leurs crêpes salées et sucrées qui étaient servies avec du cidre local.  Merci à tous ceux qui ont participé à l’organisation de cette soirée bretonne et en espérant que le temps sera plus favorable l’année prochaine !
